Incense is ubiquitous in most major religions worldwide. It is the top of mind offering made to Buddha and deities, as a sign of respect, along with flowers, food, drink, and papers, dating back to the beginning of human history as often mentioned in ancient Buddhist scriptures.
Whether it is religious or spiritual, a critical practice sparking the creation of good Karma of giving, overcoming selfishness, overcoming pride by taking an incense stick and lighting it as an offering with a bow. A simple way to do something, without expectation of return. An act of generosity and letting go. Some take time and pride in the symbolic process, selecting their sticks, lighting them up and offering as a sacred ritual on its own.
Whichever that you are using it for, making an incense offering before your daily prayers or meditation for some, is a good way to focus your attention and create a pure space to begin your practice, whether that space is a temple, your home altar or altars for religious purposes.
Note: We recommend that whilst the incense sticks are being lit, please do make sure that you have proper air circulation in your space, weather permissible open environment and avoid inhaling the fumes directly.
